Nightmare on Elm Street
I am also drawn to characters that are kind of zingy. I don’t have a lot [of] interest to show up in stuff where the character’s just kind of laying flat, just kind of there. I like stuff that’s got kind of a real interesting arc.

Putting money, and your feet, where your mouth is →
The number of such events seems to grow year after year. That is not a surprise. Getting batches of people into the streets for a noble cause can lift the human spirit as well as an organization’s bank balance.

Silent Clapping
Have you ever experienced joy so great that your impulse to express it was so inappropiate to the environment that you had to settle for a silent clap?
I normally do this by making fists and gently clapping my wrists together.

The Wall, 4/29/10 →
The wall is constructed of many bricks; things like fear, pain, loneliness, hopelessness, burdens, doubt, guilt, exhaustion - physical, exhaustion-mental, exhaustion-emotional, exhaustion-spiritual. It is a black hole in our psyche, a gap in our fence, a riptide in our reservoir with the potential to carry us away. The wall becomes nearly physically tangible to a runner, but the same wall exists...

The Kentucky Derby
My idea of celebrating of the Derby is heading to an appropriately themed bash, wearing a big hat and summer dress, and drinking mint juleps. As I was never into horses when I was younger, sadly, this racing phenomenon is beyond me. I would, however, like to give a round of applause to the creativity and brilliance of the contenders’ names. A few of my favorites include:
Mission...

“Psychotherapy isn’t what you think. It isn’t a healing of an illness. It isn’t guidance from a wise counselor. It isn’t the mutual sharing of good friends. It isn’t learning esoteric knowledge. It isn’t being shown the error of one’s ways. It isn’t finding a new religion…

Bridge Running
A very sound piece of advice I once heard was “get to the starting line uninjured” and that’s exactly what I’m aiming to do. The human body is amazing in both its resiliency and fragility. A standard 6 mile speed work out can level even the best trained and hardest working runners. This fickleness humbles me and makes me grateful for the days I feel healthy.
I’ve been feeling good after my...

Notion of the Day
Cognitive dissonance: is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously. The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance by changing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, or by justifying or rationalizing them.

On an upswing
After a recent spell that left me feeling blah and out of love with running, it’s been a much improved week.
A few things that I am currently looking forward to/am grateful for:
Monday’s re-set rain run and the kindness of strangers
Sport beans
A new computer
Packets galore of free cheez-its
Cookies for breakfast
Sean’s play on Friday
Chen reunion weekend
Bamboozle
A raise
And,...

Word of the Day
Schadenfreude: pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others. The word derives from Schaden, “adversity, harm”, and Freude, “joy.”
Antonyms
The Buddhist concept of mudita, “sympathetic joy” or “happiness in another’s good fortune”, is cited as an example of the opposite of schadenfreude.[13][14] Alternatively, envy, which is unhappiness in...

Monday night’s rain
Kept all of the fair weather runners at home, which was fine by me. As my clothing got heavier with rain, I felt lighter than I’d felt in a while. It felt so good, in fact, that it never occurred to me to take a gu. The run consisted of counterclockwise 6 mi circuit with a clockwise one thrown in for good measure, a jaunt down the West Side High Way, cutting across the lower part of the island,...

How marathon motivation differs by gender →
nicolepf:
I always hate these studies that try to lump things by gender. They say, men run marathons because they’re competitive, women run marathons because they want to feel good about themselves. Direct quote: “The study seems to give that age-old argument that men are competitive and driven, while women are risk-averse, unassertive and driven by emotion.” It’s just SO demeaning.
WTF?

Evelyn McHale
jamburglar:
On May 1, 1947, Evelyn McHale leapt to her death from the observation deck of the Empire State Building. Photographer Robert Wiles took a photo of McHale a few minutes after her death.
The photo ran a couple of weeks later in Life magazine accompanied by the following caption:
On May Day, just after leaving her fiancé, 23-year-old Evelyn McHale wrote a note. ‘He is much better...

Excerpt from a conversation
Listen, you put a lot of work into this. Over your lifetime you’ve put a lot of work into who you are as a person, and there comes a point where you just have to realize that, while there’s always room for improvement, these things you think are so important don’t really determine who you are as a person. Making Boston will not be the highlight of your life. It will be an...
