Tonight marked my return to both running and Central Park since Nov 20’s 60K. As the run began, I asked a friend to think of the last time we had genuinely given our all on a run and had finished gasping for air, quads burning. As we approached Cat Hill, it dawned on us that it had been months. She had been ill, I had been tapering. She had been tapering, I had been injured. In no time we left our pace group behind, and we were running happy.
However, somewhere along the muddy reservoir loop, my hip started to feel less than 100%.
Too fast. I went out too, too fast.
Too soon. I came back too, too soon.
But then I realized that this was the perfect opportunity to practice mitigating pain. As I relaxed, I found myself running better, faster.
Tonight was fantastic, pain and all. But I should probably be a little kinder to myself
tomorrow next time. Good to be back.
